The closing ceremony of the cross-border commission ended in Bangui this June 27, 2024, with the signing and exchange of documents by the representatives of the Cameroon and Central African Republic delegations. It was characterised by the reading of the final communiqué and closing remarks by both Ministers.
Discussions focused on the financing of the commission, with proposals made to schedule frequent sessions. Key issues addressed included border cooperation, projects in border communities, and the creation of a special session of the mixed commission to continue from the adhoc commission. Additionally, the need for a favorable environment for the voluntary repatriation of refugees was highlighted, along with the importance of sensitizing state agents working at borders, addressing legal issues between the two countries, combating criminality, and reducing multiple road controls.
The head of the Cameroonian delegation thanked their host, President Faustin Touadera, and the people of the Central African Republic for their hospitality. In his closing remarks, Minister ATANGA NJI Paul expressed his satisfaction with the deliberations after two days of fruitful discussions on the cross-border commission and the relatively calm security situation along the borders. He noted that some legal issues, such as the disappearance of border markers, need to be addressed. He emphasized the importance of reinforcing cooperation through the creation of a mixed border commission and assured that Cameroon would observe all the recommendations.
The MINAT boss also conveyed his appreciation to President Touadera for the hospitality extended to the Cameroonian delegation and expressed gratitude to the two heads of state. On his part, Minister Bruno Yapande of the Central African Republic thanked the experts for their work and the fruitful sessions. The event concluded with the exchange of gifts to some members of the Cameroonian delegation.
